This means that sleepers arrive on site complete with all essential components already assembled, significantly accelerating track laying and enhancing efficiency. The screw spike, also known as a rail screw or lag bolt, is a substantial (~6 in or 152 mm length, slightly under 1 in or 25 mm) metal screw, expertly crafted to secure a tie plate or fasten rail. These screw spikes are meticulously fixed into precision-bored holes in the sleeper, ensuring steadfast attachment.
The tie plate, alternatively known as a baseplate or sole plate, is a crucial steel component used on rail tracks to distribute load and align flanged T rails correctly over the ties. It enhances the bearing area and stabilizes the rail gauge, securely fastened to wooden ties through strategically placed spikes or bolts.
